POLKE WINDOWS IN THE GROSSMÜNSTER

Church Tour

Semi-Precious Stones, Colour and Light

The seven agate and five coloured glass windows by Sigmar Polke are the most recent church windows in the Grossmünster. They were installed in 2009. Sigmar Polke was referring to Augusto Giacometti's Christmas windows in the choir room, where the theme is the Incarnation of God. All of Polke's windows are committed to this programme, especially the figurative ones with biblical motifs: the Son of Man, Elijah's Ascension, King David, the Scapegoat and Isaac's Sacrifice.
